It's official! On 18th April, we flung open the doors to our latest venture, our Cake Shop! We spent a long time searching for the perfect spot and are delighted to be nestled in the heart of foodie haven Bruntsfield.
We call it our "cake wonderland" - with sixteen haberdashery drawers of cupcakes, it's a nostalgic space dedicated to all things sweet. Thanks to everyone who stopped by in our first week of opening. We sold out of cupcakes by mid-afternoon on the first day and we haven't stopped welcoming the queues since. It's always important that we offer our customers what they're looking for - as well as what you didn't know you needed (Baileys and white chocolate cupcake, anyone?) - and we're glad to have got our offer just right for the Southside!
On a perfect spring evening last week, we invited local bloggers, critics, press, regulars and friends to enjoy our new space and toast our second Cuckoo with fizz and freebies! The Cake Shop happily buzzed with the thoughts of everyone from lifestyle bloggers to food writers, die-hard fans and restaurant critics all eager to see what the fuss was about. Having painstakingly sourced the finer details of the space, we love the fact that our rolling pin door handle, fabulous chandelier, retro scales and bespoke Parasite Ceramics wallpaper are indeed proving to be conversation starters.
We offered guests samples of our Cuckoo's Breakfast Tea, sourced from Pekoe Tea, and our bespoke coffee blend, hand-roasted in Stockbridge by Mr Eion. We really do like to keep things local and use suppliers close to our heart. The good news is that your Cuckoo's experience doesn't have to end when you leave. As well as those white cupcake boxes full of favourites, you can also buy aprons, cards, tea leaves and coffee from our retail concession within our Bruntsfield store.
The pace hasn't slowed at Dundas Street, either. We've been busy serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and everything in between. The beauty of Edinburgh is that (almost) everywhere is now within walking distance of Cuckoo's and last week was definitely a day for a pit-stop on the way to the Botanics or Princes Street Gardens.
Thanks to the serendipitous combination of sunshine and friendly customers, our milkshakes are proving to be a big hit this month. We serve traditional, thick ice cream shakes at both our venues. Take your pick from vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, peanut butter, caramel, banana or coconut. Made with three large scoops of Mackie's ice cream, like many of our offerings, they make for a truly Scottish indulgence.
Somehow, our bakers are also finding time to invent and test new flavour combintions for the upcoming circled dates on our calendar. We're developing cupcakes for Father's Day (21st June), Canada Day (1st July) and Independence Day (4th July). Also in the piping-line is our infamous summer range which, true to form, will be a celebration of seasonal, fresh produce and zingy, memorable tastes.
We'd love your input to help us design our new ranges. Do you have a request of anything you'd like to see? A suggestion for a flavour? If so, get in touch and we'll add them to our experimentation board and hopefully your idea will appear in one of the drawers of our cake cabinet!
Lastly, we're excited to break the news of our new loyalty programme. Very soon, Cuckoo's fans will be able to use our App to access our loyalty scheme, with rewards and treats all year round. Keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook Page over the coming weeks for the launch!
Phew, what a month... Cuckoo for now! xx
