Autumn in Edinburgh, a Cuckoo Halloween and WIN Cake!
Cuckoo! Time to embrace all things autumnal! We love Autumn, with its breath of fresh air mornings, that rich and wild transitional period before winter arrives. Conker fights (on lunch breaks, obviously), crunching leaves and making the most of nature's bounty. You'll find plenty of yummy hand-picked berries in our cakes at this time of year and you can cosy up with a warm welcome and a lovely brew at one of our tearooms.
Autumn will always remind us of heading back to school and all the newness that entails! (Parents, we hear ya!) True to this spirit, we have a number of new additions to the Cuckoo family (there are 21 of us now!) and we're looking for new staff at both of our shops so drop in your CV when you're passing! That reminds us, did you catch our 'Behind the Cuckoo Clock' feature last month, where Cuckoo stalwart Rory talks canal boats, Edinburgh eateries and macaroni pies? And check out this month's 'Behind the Cuckoo Clock' where our baker Hannah gives tips on how to cope with early mornings!
We also have a non-human addition to tell you about. Along with our staff, our ovens are the heart and soul of Cuckoo's Bakery and we're chuffed to welcome another fabulous oven to our bakery! More ovens mean more cakes which means more happy customers! And if you're planning a bake or two yourself this month, our bakers are on hand with this month's 'Fresh From the Kitchen' tip: "For a healthier and dairy-free option, try swapping butter in your cake recipe for the same weight in ripe avocado!" Ingenious, right?
We've always been conscious of our place within the bigger picture. Whether that's donating unsold cakes to local charities or sourcing the best suppliers close to home, we're environmentally-minded in the way we do business. The good news is that you can help! Did you know that if you bring along your empty boxes to re-use next time you purchase our cakes, you receive a 10% discount. So, whether it's a single box or a six-er, keep your Cuckoo's cupcake box and pop it in your bag / desk drawer/ dashboard/ bike basket, so that you always have it handy! Re-use = less waste for the environment + more money in your pocket = win win!
Social media is where we keep our finger on the pulse and connect with our customers, from new product ideas to feedback, giveaways and competitions. Did you know we're also on Instagram? Our resident in-house snapper Pippa will help you discover a whole new side of Cuckoo's... so follow us now @cuckoosbakery! Go on, get some cake in your feed!
As always, we have an eye on the diary, designing and flavour-testing for the upcoming festive dates. Sshhhh, don't say the C word just yet! :) What we can reveal, though, is our exciting plans for this Halloween. In the past, we've scared the life out of our cakes at the Edinburgh Dungeon and skulked around graveyards in the pursuit of cupcake horror. This year, we're masterminding something truly unique. With six gory clues, we're inviting you to grab a slice of macabre Edinburgh history and join us in piecing together the puzzle of a totally cuckoo murder mystery. But wait. It's not yet quite October, so watch this space!
In the meantime, we have a much less ghoulish competition for all our readers: You can win a birthday cake for a friend or loved one! We're all about celebrating the positive things in life and birthdays are high up on that list! Our celebration cakes are always in great demand, from quirky red velvet to gooey chocolate, simple vanilla to luscious lemon. They're a guaranteed way to bring the wow factor to any birthday and show someone they're really adored. So, we have a 10-inch celebration cake up for grabs! The winner will receive a special Cuckoo's Bakery voucher to redeem the cake at any point in the next twelve months, whenever your friend's birthday falls. In order to be in with a chance of winning, we'd like you to tell us why your friend deserves a Cuckoo's Birthday Cake? Simply write your friend's name and your reasons in the comments box below.
Deadline for entry is 11th October 2015 and we'll announce the winner here on Tuesday 13th October 2015, so spread the word! Cuckoo for now!
