The Story So Far

Visitors to Cuckoo's often ask how our bakery began or what other hairbrained schemes are just around the corner! The Cuckoo's journey has been full of milestones and surprises; here's are a few that got us to where we are today.

Early 2010: Cuckoo's owners quit their jobs in London to follow their dream of opening a cupcake bakery and tea room in Edinburgh. Their friends thought the idea was ‘cuckoo!’ and so Cuckoo’s Bakery was born. Christmas Eve 2010 the cupcake duo pick up the keys to their new shop.

February 2011: Cuckoo’s opens its doors on Valentine’s Day. A fitting start to Edinburgh's love affair with cupcakes.

November 2011: Cuckoo’s Bakery begins to cause a stir in the press, including glossy magazines like Cosmopolitan who name Cuckoo’s one of ’10 best places for tea and cake’ in the whole of the UK!

January 2012: Cuckoo’s New Year’s eve cupcake – raspberry and pink champagne - graces the pages of fortnightly fashion magazine, Stylist.

February 2012: Cuckoo’s breaks hearts on Valentine’s Day as the kitchen reaches capacity for the first time and we have to stop taking orders.

March 2012: Cuckoo’s hit a new milestone – up to 1,000 cupcakes are now being baked by hand everyday in order to sate Edinburgh’s  cupcake cravings.

May 2012: Cuckoo’s love the local community which is why we began donating any cakes that aren’t sold to an Edinburgh charity that distributes them to homeless, hostels and women's refuges in the capital.

June 2012: During a trip to Scotland, Paul Hollywood, best known for judging BBC's Great British Bake Off, visited Cuckoo's and tried one of our Sticky Toffee Pudding cupcakes. 

October 2012: In a spooky twist, Cuckoo’s Bakery launch their ghoulish collection of Halloween cupcakes at world famous tourist attraction, The Edinburgh Dungeon

December 2012: Cuckoo’s begins supplying cupcakes and other baked treats to Waterstones' new café on Scotland’s premiere shopping destination, Princes Street; proving bookworms really do love Cuckoo’s!

March 2013: Cuckoo’s launch their Easter 2013 range to much acclaim and the team of bakers crack their 50,000th egg in the bakery!

May 2013: Excitment ensues at the bakery as we are announced as being in the Top Six finalists for Scottish Baker of the Year 2013.

June 2013: Cuckoo’s reaches 10,000 followers on Facebook and gives away 1,000 cakes to followers who visit the Dundas Street store on 2nd and 3rd July. Of course - the cakes go fast!

August 2013: Just in time for the Edinburgh Festival - the new Cuckoo's Bakery van hits the streets of Edinburgh, carefully carrying cakes to all ends of the city. 

October 2013: Cuckoo's launch their most fabulous range of Halloween cakes "Murder at the Bakery" featuring wicked flavours and unique designs. The bakers set to work creating shards of sugar glass, eyeballs and fingers to delight and terrify our customers. 

November 2013: We hatch our first ever gang of Bernard Turkeys and unleash them on our fabulous American customers just in time for Thanksgiving 2013.

February 2014: Cuckoo's celebrate their third birthday in the only way they know how - give away a free cake to every customer!

March 2014: With 200 days to go to the Scottish Independence Referendum vote, Cuckoo's launch their now infamous Referendum cupcakes and create a 7 month long Polling Campaign carefully based on customer purchases. A media frenzy ensues and Cuckoo's brand is taken global and featured in international newspapers, TV, radio and online media!

April 2014: Spring has sprung in Edinburgh and our Creme Egg brownies fly off the shelves - all staff are drafted in to unwrap 1,000's of Creme Eggs!

May 2014: Cuckoo's launch their very own bespoke coffee blend 'Cuckoo!', blended and roasted less than 1 mile from the Dundas Street store by the wonderful Mr Eion... Customers love it - we're happy, they're happy! 

May 2014: Our proudest moment to date - we were summoned to Glasgow to collect an award for 'The Best Cake in Scotland 2014' at the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards. The award-winning Raspberry and White Chocolate cupcake goes in to double production overnight!

July 2014: Harvey Nichols begins stocking Cuckoo's Bakery products in their Foodmarket on the Forth Floor of their Edinburgh store. All freshly baked and delivered to Harvey Nichols each day direct from our bakery. We are over the moon!

August 2014: Our third fabulous summer range of cakes hit the stores... The cakes spark nostalgic memories of childhood summer holidays and include lollies, ice creams and summer desserts which are given the Cuckoo's cupcake twist!

September 2014: The Scottish Independence Referendum arrives and the media descend on our bakery... 18 journalists camp out on the day of the referendum, circling our Yes, No and Undecided cupcakes for photos and film footage. We yet again reach worldwide news and begin hearing reports of coverage from every continent. Our polls mirror the results and Cuckoo's is hailed as bring colour and fun to the debate.

November 2014: Stylist magazine list Cuckoo's Bakery in the 'Best Cake Shops in the UK'. The whole team at Cuckoo's is beaming for days!

December 2014: Our 'Box of Festive Treats' range is launched for Christmas 2014 - our most decadent flavours to date bring joy to Edinburgh for the festive season!

April 2015: Our second shop opens at 116 Bruntsfield Place on 18th April 2015. Check out our Bruntsfield Cake Shop.

May 2015: We did it again! For the second year in a row Cuckoo's Bakery wins the top award for 'Best Cake in Scotland' at the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards 2015.

July 2015: Cuckoo's is listed in the Top 25 Best Cupcake Shops in the World by Buzzfeed. We're super chuffed... of course!

August 2015: Our fabulous retro sweetie inspired summer cupcake range goes on sale and is available throughout the month of August. We have our busiest ever month as festival fever hits Edinburgh!

November 2015: Due to increased growth in our online sales, we launch more products online and increase our range of fabulous celebration cakes which are proving a huge hit with our customers.

December 2015: The run up to Christmas is crazy and our range of 2015 Christmas cupcakes are the most popular festive range we have ever produced selling fast up to Christmas Eve.
